Trying to eliminate an unwanted habit through white-knuckle suppression almost never succeeds. When you tell yourself "I will not check social media when stressed," your attention remains fixated on the very behavior you want to avoid.

The Anatomy of the Habit Loop

Every habit consists of three components:

  • The Cue: The trigger (stress, boredom, fatigue, time of day).
  • The Routine: The physical or mental action you take.
  • The Reward: The relief or satisfaction delivered to the brain.

To break a bad habit, you keep the Cue and the Reward identical, but you swap in a constructive Routine.

The Substitution Formula: If the cue is 3:00 PM afternoon fatigue and the reward is a brief mental break, replace scrolling mindless feeds with stepping outside for 5 minutes of fresh air and sunlight.
